The Main Greek Gods/Goddesses

The top Greek gods and goddess are those known as the deities of Mt. Olympus, which is the location of their thrones.

The 12 Olympians
Gods:

Please note that the gods are given just a basic 1 or 2 word attribute, but most of them deserve a good deal more prose than would work on this quick reference chart.

  • Apollo – music (later, the sun),
  • Ares – war,
  • Dionysus – wine,
  • Hermes – messenger,
  • Hephaestus -blacksmith,
  • Poseidon – sea/king, and
  • Zeus – sky/king.

Goddesses:

  • Aphrodite – love/beauty,
  • Athena – wisdom/crafts,
  • Artemis – hunt,
  • Demeter – grain, and
  • Hera – queen/marriage.

You may sometimes see:

 

  • Asclepius – healing,
  • Heracles – hero,
  • Hestia – hearth,
  • Persephone – Underworld/queen, and
  • Hades – Underworld/king
